Google business profile suspended: what it means

If your Google Business Profile is suspended, your business usually disappears from Google Maps and from the box on the right of Google search, or you lose the ability to manage it. Google does this when it believes the profile breaks its rules, or when something about the account looks suspicious.

The good news: many suspensions are caused by fixable mistakes. The bad news: the first thing most people do, making a new profile, usually makes it worse.

Why was my profile suspended suddenly?

Business owners often say the suspension came out of nowhere. In practice it usually follows a change: a new address, a new name, a burst of edits, a new manager added, or a review spike. Google’s systems review profiles automatically, so a problem that sat unnoticed for years can be flagged after an edit.

The most common rule breaks, all taken from Google’s guidelines for representing your business:

  • Keywords in the business name, such as “Smith Plumbing – Emergency Plumber Glasgow”. The name must match your real-world name.
  • A virtual office or PO box address. Google says a rented mailing address you do not operate from is not eligible.
  • A co-working desk without permanent signage, staff during business hours and customers visiting.
  • Showing a home address when customers do not visit. Service-area businesses should hide the address.
  • More than one profile for the same business at the same location.
  • A phone number or website that is not under the business’s direct control.

My profile was suspended right after I verified it

This is common with new profiles. Verification triggers a closer review, and if the address, category or name raises a flag, the profile can be suspended straight away. Check the points above, especially the address type and the business name, before you appeal.

How to find the exact problem: a 7-step check

  1. Read the notice. Google sometimes shows a reason in your Business Profile or by email.
  2. Check your name. Remove anything that is not on your signage, invoices and website.
  3. Check your address. Is it a real place you work from? If customers do not visit, hide it and set a service area.
  4. Check your categories. Use the fewest that describe what your business is.
  5. Check your phone and website. Both should be yours and point to this business only.
  6. Check for duplicates. Search Google Maps for your name and phone number.
  7. Gather proof. Photos of signage or vehicles, a utility bill or business rates bill, your business registration, and photos of your work.

Can I just create a new profile with the same name?

No. Creating a second profile for the same business is itself against Google’s guidelines, which allow one profile per business location. It can link the new profile to the suspended one and lead to both being removed. Fix the issue and appeal the original instead.

How to appeal

Sign in to your Business Profile and use the appeal option shown on the suspended profile. Fix the issues first, then appeal, and upload the evidence you gathered. Keep your answers short and factual. Do not keep editing the profile while the appeal is open.

Appeals can take days or weeks. If Google rejects the appeal, read the reason, fix what it points to, and try again with better evidence.

How to stop it happening again

  • Keep the name exactly as it appears in the real world.
  • Make big changes, such as an address move, one at a time.
  • Only give manager access to people you trust, and remove old managers.
  • Never buy reviews or offer hidden incentives. Fake reviews are also illegal in the UK under the DMCC Act 2024.

How to verify Google Business Profile safely: use the method Google offers in your dashboard (often a short video of your premises, signage and tools), make sure the name, address and category match your real business, and do not edit key details straight after verification.
