Google Business Profile optimisation, done properly and by the rules

Google Business Profile optimisation matters because your profile is often the first thing customers see. We set it up so it shows up, looks right and gets the call.

Key points

What Google Business Profile optimisation covers

Your profile is the box that appears on Google Maps and on the right of Google search. Google Business Profile optimisation means filling in every useful field, choosing the right categories and keeping the profile active, all within Google’s rules.

  • Categories. The most specific primary category, plus only the secondary ones that are true.
  • Services. A full list using Google’s own service names plus your custom ones.
  • Business description. Clear and honest, no links or keyword stuffing.
  • Photos. Real photos of your work, team and premises.
  • Posts. Regular updates, offers and news.
  • Reviews. A plan to ask for them and a reply to every one.

Staying inside Google's rules

Plenty of profiles get suspended for breaking rules their owners never knew about. Google’s guidelines for representing your business say, for example, that virtual offices are not eligible, that service-area businesses should hide their address, and that the business name must match the real-world name without added keywords.

More detail

Google Business Profile optimisation: choosing categories

Your primary category has more influence on which searches you appear for than almost anything else on the profile. Google asks you to pick the fewest categories that describe what your business is, not everything it offers. A dental practice should be “Dentist”, not “Dentist, Teeth whitening service, Orthodontist” unless each is genuinely a core part of the business.

Services and products tell Google, and searchers, exactly what you do. We use Google’s predefined service names first, add custom services where yours are missing, and write short, plain descriptions. Attributes such as wheelchair access, appointment-only or online consultations are filled in where true.

Profiles with real, recent photos look more trustworthy and tend to get more engagement. We add photos of your work, team and premises over time rather than all at once. Posts share news, offers, events or recent projects, and keep the profile active in Google’s eyes.

Every review gets a reply, good or bad: thank happy customers by name and service, and answer complaints calmly with a way to resolve them offline. Replies show future customers you care and add useful context. We never write, buy or filter reviews, which is illegal in the UK. See our reviews policy.

Your profile’s Performance section shows calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches people used to find you. We tag the website link so Google Analytics 4 can tell profile visits apart from other traffic, and include all of this in your monthly report.

Google needs to confirm your business is real before the profile goes public. Depending on your business, it may ask for a short video showing your location, equipment or signage, a postcard, a phone call or an email. Video verification is now common and often fastest. We help you prepare so it goes through first time.

  • Manager access to your profile (we never ask for your Google password).
  • 10 to 20 real photos of your work, premises or team.
  • Your full list of services and the areas you cover.
  • Your opening hours, or confirmation that you work by appointment.

A well-optimised profile is the foundation, but Google also looks at how close a searcher is to you and how well known your business is. Reviews, consistent listings and a strong website all help. That is why most clients pair the £149 setup with local SEO or at least a good WordPress website.

Be careful with anyone selling a “Google Maps ranking service” with guaranteed positions. Nobody controls the map pack; we improve the things Google says it uses: relevance, distance and prominence.

Here is the checklist we work through on every profile:

  1. Business name matches your signage and website exactly.
  2. Address shown only if customers visit; otherwise hidden with a service area.
  3. Primary category is the most specific true one.
  4. Services list complete, using Google’s suggestions first.
  5. Opening hours correct, including holidays.
  6. Website link goes to the right page, with tracking so you can see the visits.
  7. At least 10 real photos, added over time rather than all at once.
  8. Every review has a reply.

Good Google Business Profile optimisation is mostly doing these basics properly and keeping them up to date.
